Risk of Rain 2 celebrates second birthday with sizeable Anniversary Update on PC
March 2021 marks two years since Hopoo Game's enormously successful co-operative rogue-like shooter sequel Risk of Rain 2 first entered early access, and the developer is celebrating with the launch of a significant free update on PC. Risk of Rain 2's Anniversary Update - which launches this Thursday, 25th March - is intended to "flesh out and round out the base game", revisiting old items and finishing up content that didn't make it Hopoo's version 1.0 release. For starters, it introduces a previously scrapped Survivor known as the Bandit (Hopoo notes the scrapped version, which has since been revived by modders, will continue to work alongside the new iteration), as well as an abandoned boss referred to as the Grandparent. Why did you bring back the Rogue for Diablo 4? Luis Barriga: We felt like with the lineup that we were slowly building up, with the Barbarian, the Sorcerer and the Druid, the Rogue gives us this awesome two-in-one capability of representing that finesse dexterity class, both on the melee side and on the ranged side.

Tabletop-RPG rogue-like For the King heads to the jungle next month in first paid expansion
For the King was a game that I enjoyed immensely when it released back in 2018, and now developer IronOak Games has revealed it'll be bringing the table-top-style fantasy adventure's very first paid expansion, Lost Civilization, to PC on 10th February. For the King received a generous helping of free DLC updates following its launch on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Switch, adding the likes of new nautical adventures, journeys to icebound climes, and even a special "uncooperative mode". Lost Civilization, however, will be For the King's first paid expansion - or Adventure Pack, as IronOak is calling it - and introduces a brand-new jungle region, arena battles, wands and dual wielding, two new playable characters, and "tons of" new enemies and loot. Developer Housemarque, known for the celebrated likes of Resogun and Nex Machina, has shared new details of its upcoming PS5-exclusive sci-fi shooter Returnal, this time focussing on the looping structure and combat driving the game's moody, rogue-like action. Pulpy exploration adventure Curious Expedition 2 leaves early access this month
Curious Expedition 2, developer Maschinen-Mensch's 19th-century rogue-like exploration sequel, is leaving Steam Early Access and launching in its version 1.0 guise on 28th January. Likes its predecessor, Curious Expedition 2 casts players as late 19th century explorers, packing them off to distant climes - in this case, a series of mysterious, storm-shrouded islands in the Atlantic ocean - in search of daring adventure and priceless treasure. In gameplay terms, that manifests as an unusual, but effective, blend of strategy - requiring players to manage their limited resources in order to survive and stave off madness as they make explore each mission's procedurally generated map - alongside trading, dice-based combat, and enjoyably pulpy choose-your-own-adventure-style narrative vignettes. Mega-Man-X-inspired rogue-like sequel 30XX enters Steam early access in February
Developer Batterystaple Games has announced that 30XX, the sequel to its enjoyable Mega-Man-X-inspired procedural rogue-like 20XX, will enter Steam early access on 17th February. 30XX's predecessor - which released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Switch back in 2018 (following around four years of Steam early access development on PC) - is a bit of a treat, transforming Capcom's classic Mega Man X run-and-gun formula into a delightfully replayable procedurally generated platform rogue-like. Although its procedural algorithm, which constructs stages out of pre-designed level chunks, could be a bit hit and miss, its tight platforming action (featuring a choice of two distinct heroes), entertaining bosses, and a wide array of abilities to keep each run fresh helped make it easy to overlook the occasional wobble - and it even managed to pack in optional co-op play for some added amusement. Dead Cells' second paid expansion Fatal Falls gets late January release date
Hardened explorers of developer Motion Twin's majestic rogue-like action-platformer Dead Cells will have new avenues for adventure on 26th January, now confirmed as the release date for second paid expansion Fatal Falls. Fatal Falls, which follows on from last year's The Bad Seed paid DLC, throws open more doors of Dead Cells' ever-shifting castle to offer passage to two new biomes - Fractured Shrines and The Undying Shores - as well as introducing new enemies, a new boss, and more. Both biomes exist beyond the castles walls, with Fractured Shrines resembling a series of islands high in the clouds, occupied by pagan snake people and giant axe-wielding statues.

Spelunky 1 & 2 are heading to Switch next summer
Developer Derek Yu's much-loved subterranean platform rogue-like Spelunky - and its critically acclaimed sequel - are finally heading to Switch, with a launch window of "summer" 2021. There's been a rising clamour for both games on Switch for quite some time, of course; partly because the brisk replay loop inherent in rogue-likes is particularly well-suited to portable play, but mostly, simply, because Spelunky 1 and 2 are just utterly masterful games. Eurogamer called Spelunky "a creation of rare crystal clarity that sparkles from every angle" when it reviewed the acclaimed 2012 remake on PC, giving its refined procedural platforming a mighty 10/10 (and, later, an Essential badge when they came in). Necromunda: Underhive Wars is getting a tanky new gang – the Van Saar
The first DLC for Necromunda: Underhive Wars, a Warhammer 40,000-themed, XCOM-style action strategy game, releases on Monday, December 14, adding a new playable faction: the high-tech ranged fighters of the Van Saar Gang. According to a press release from developer Rogue Factor and publisher Focus Home Interactive, the Van Saar will sport more technologically advanced armour and deadlier ranged weapons than their rival gangs, including “improvised explosives, bolter shells, and automated turrets”. That’s a commanding arsenal compared with the brutal, low-tech pit-fighting gear carried by many of Necromunda’s underhive gangs - but it comes at a price.

Risk of Rain 2 gets its version 1.0 release on Xbox One, PS4, and Switch today
After almost 14 months of early access development on consoles, Hopoo Games' acclaimed co-operative rogue-like shooter sequel Risk of Rain 2 is getting its full version 1.0 release today on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Switch. Risk of Rain 2, if you're unfamiliar, takes its 2D predecessor's breathless core co-op action - pitting players against an ever-more-relentless parade of enemies in an increasingly hilarious ballet of bullets and chaos - and transplants the whole thing in three dimensions. Development on the console versions of Risk of Rain 2 has lagged a little behind the PC game throughout early access, but Hopoo has been focussing its attention on wrapping up work on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch since the PC release of version 1.0 in August.
