As expected, Warner Bros' application for a patent on Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system has been granted. IGN reports the US Patent and Trademark Office released an issue notice, which is currently offline, on 3rd February 2021 confirming the patent goes into effect on 23rd February 2021, with an option to maintain until 2035. Nemesis takes a familiar Stellaris end-game mechanic - in which the galaxy is plunged into crisis by invading AI forces who'll either perish in bloody battle or eradicate all known life - and switches it up so that players can become the source of the crisis themselves. To reach that point, however, players will need to perform nefarious deeds and accrue Menace.

The revelation came in the latest video by the superb YouTube series Game Maker's Toolkit, which analyses how the Nemesis system works. In a rundown of its most recent earnings results, Resident Evil series publisher Capcom announced that Resident Evil 3 remake sales had hit "2.7 million units" in the (roughly) three months following the horror game's launch. While that's still an impressive figure, it doesn't quite measure up to its predecessor Resident Evil 2's sales - and it seems the studio's not wholly surprised about RE3's performance.
